Astro running across a sandy beach sounds and feels completely different than running on a fluffy cloud, for example. I can’t say I had very high expectations for Astro’s Playroom, a game that comes free with every PlayStation 5 console. I figured it might be a cute series of minigames, akin to the robot-themed minigames in the PlayStation 4’s pack-in title, The Playroom.
Other stages are linear platforming challenges that use Astro’s laser-powered hover-jump. These portions are also pretty forgiving, with generous checkpoints and obstacles that provide just enough resistance to make you pause a moment, but not so much that you get stuck. Plus, it’s hard to get too mad with the game’s infectiously upbeat soundtrack going in the background. We hope you enjoy these updates as much as we had fun making them!
Up the same cliff as the Ico easter egg, on the opposite side you can find a crowd observing a Bot teeing off with a golf club while wearing a PS VR headset. This references Everybody’s Golf VR by Clap Hanz, released in 2019. Up until the 2017 game, Everybody’s Golf was called Hot Shots Golf in North America.
This scene refers to his safe cracking skills, and this setup in particular serves as the cover for the European version of the game, where it was known simply as Sly Raccoon. On the right-hand side of the pool at the very end of Bot Beach is a bloated Bot with a crown on its head and a cake on its belly. This is a reference to 2009’s Fat Princess for the PS3, developed by Titans Studios. The game was a twist on Capture the Flag where you feed your Princess cake to make her heavier, and thus harder for your opponents to steal. At the start of Deep Dataspace, check the right-hand side for a lower area where a Bot in a red trench coat is constantly firing on a jester-looking Bot.
These collectibles add an extra layer of depth and nostalgia to the game. The game itself effectively utilizes the DualSense controller’s features, resulting in an engaging and innovative gaming experience. Although the game is relatively short, it packs a lot of fun and demonstrates the potential of the PS5 and DualSense in this new generation of gaming.
Astro Bot Travels Through Levels In Fun And Creative Ways
With rotating platforms, ones that disappear shortly after stepping on them, and lightning platforms that can take out Astro in one hit. Astro’s Playroom has six main worlds, each divided into four levels, although there are exceptions. From a tropical beach to a cyberpunk raceway, they nail many areas. Everything pops, and with so much detail, you can spend quite a bit just exploring. The other two are much weaker in comparison, considering the frog suit in Cooling Sprints is heavy to use with directional launching and motion controls. Meanwhile, the monkey suit in GPU Jungle is very frustrating to use outside of the cool swinging action due to the weird timing and its usage of the motion controls.

Better graphics and faster load times are fine, but the subtle effects that are imparted via the controller are something new — and something wonderful. And Astro shows that while Sony might excel at realistic and sometimes dark games, it’s also very capable of making a title that young kids can enjoy. While it might not be as deep and rich a world as Super Mario Bros., Astro’s Playroom is a title that young and old can both enjoy. In Astro’s Playroom, the adaptive triggers come up a lot, but the most obvious demonstration of them is when Astro hops into a spring suit. Once inside, the game turns into a side-scrolling platformer, as Astro is able to launch itself to the left or right using a giant spring in its legs.
From the moment you boot up the demo, the game takes you through the DualSense. It takes you through the vibration, adaptive triggers, touchpad, motion sensor and microphone. The demo would still be enjoyable if this were the whole demo.
